Resumo

Introducción: El licopeno es uno de los pigmentos carotenoides encontrados en la naturaleza. Este pigmento carotenoide no posee actividad de pro vitamina A; sin embargo, tiene un efecto protector contra radicales libres, siendo considerado un potente antiozidante. Objetivo: compilar la información disponible sobre la ingesta de licopeno y su posible acción como fotoprotector en la piel humana. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica en buscadores Medline, Lilacs y Scielo utilizando las palabras clave, licopeno, carotenoides y fotoenvejecimiento de la piel en portugués, inglés y español. Resultado: Para este estudio, se seleccionaron 265 artículos, 46 fueron incluidos y 219 fueron excluidos debido a que no cumplían con los criterios de elegibilidad. Conclusión: Los estudios expuestos en esta revisión demuestran que otros carotenoides, además del licopeno, tienen efecto fotoprotector. La fotoprotección ofrecida por la suplementación de licopeno es menor a la que ofrecen los protectores solares y por tanto no puede utilizarse como sustituto. Sin embargo, el conocimiento actual de las propiedades del licopeno puede servir en un futuro para desarrollar algún fotoprotector de administración oral.
